Firestone Walker “Parabola” Bourbon Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout (2013 Vintage): I finally got to crack open one of the two bottles I’ve been storing for my brother and I. Right off the bat I got tons of fusel notes with notes of chocolate and echoes of coffee and oak. Lingering roasted malts on the palate with a slight oatiness to the mouthfeel. Having later looked it up, this stout was brewed with oats. After hearing all of the hype around this beer I was kind of let down. Don’t get me wrong. This is a great beer that is simple, yet refined and sophisticated. It just wasn’t what I was hoping it would be.
After mulling over this beer I came to the conclusion I have similar feelings about most of Firestone Walker and their Proprietor’s Reserve Series. Though §ucaba and Double DBA are delicious, well-crafted beers and I appreciate the time and artisanship that went into creating them. They just aren’t adventurous enough for my palate. I was planning on saving my second bottle for Winter, but I’ll probably just let it sit for a year and see how it changes.
